Various studies in applied clinical research have produced concerning results regarding oral health, an area increasingly under the focus of public health research. Researchers in healthcare emphasize that senior citizens, comprising of individuals in need of care in outpatient and inpatient care facilities, exhibit worrisome oral health and constitute a high-risk group. Thus, periodontitis represents a prevalent condition. An anti-inflammatory diet is linked to maintaining healthy oral health. A healthy periodontium serves as the fundamental basis for oral health. Additionally, periodontitis can be associated with systemic diseases in the rest of the body.
The treatment options for chronic inflammation of the periodontal tissues are limited, currently relying on the mechanical treatment of periodontitis, which involves the removal of biofilms and hard deposits on root surfaces. For probing depths exceeding 5 mm, additional antibiotic administration is required. Given the multifactorial nature of periodontal diseases, various approaches to combat inflamed periodontal tissues appear essential. SalvaRok® can achieve an additional therapeutic effect, particularly in restoring the balance of the oral microbiota by eliminating niches for periodontopathogenic microorganisms and preventing their growth. The excessive immune response triggered during periodontitis, leading to genetic damage and tissue degradation, can be modulated through dietary changes. However, the current conservative treatment lacks sufficient evidence for therapy-related dietary recommendations, despite certain micronutrients being offered as dietary supplements, some of which have been studied for their effectiveness in vitro and in vivo. Nevertheless, dietary changes and dietary supplements are not integrated into treatments. Especially in the high-risk group, which largely consists of seniors with multiple morbidities, a consistent dietary change is difficult to achieve. Consequently, the integration of micronutrient supplementation becomes the sole viable option. Targeted preventive micronutrient supplementation can contribute to minimizing inflammation, maintaining the balance of the oral microbiota, preventing tissue degradation, and positively influencing treatment outcomes.
Currently, conservative periodontitis treatment provides insufficient evidence for therapy-related dietary recommendations, despite certain micronutrients being offered as dietary supplements, some of which have been studied for their effectiveness in vitro and in vivo. A particular challenge lies in the fact that the high-risk group of periodontal diseases is almost entirely composed of patients with multiple morbidities. Consequently, the supplementation of micronutrients must be associated with periodontitis patients.
Our planned placebo-controlled double-blind study will treat two groups with periodontal diseases from the high-risk group with either SalvaRok® or a placebo preparation over a period of 12 weeks. Subsequently, the groups will be compared, and the results will be statistically evaluated. The aim of this study is to test SalvaRok® for its effectiveness based on clinical parameters for pathological diagnosis and thus to improve oral health. SalvaRok® is not exclusively applicable to conservative periodontitis therapy but also acts as an antioxidant and DNA repair agent to improve oral flora. SalvaRok® supports the preservation of a range of metabolic processes and prevents the destruction of micronutrient and supramolecular structures. Stay tuned and let us advise you!
